Avalon

This municipality was originally named "West Bellevue" because it is situated west of the borough of Bellevue. However, in the late 1800's, a referendum was held to determine a new name for the town and "Avalon" won out over "West Bellevue". This is significant for several reasons. It didn't have to be decided by the Supreme Court and it eliminated Bellevue from the list of municipalities in this area with duplicate names (i.e. the Sewickleys, the Ben Avons, Leet/Leetsdale).

A simple, but well-placed sign located on the busy State Route 65 thoroughfare.
